gabi dao  is an artist and filmmaker from the unceded and ancestral
territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh and
Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh Nations (Vancouver, Canada) who has been
living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands for the past few years.

Their practice is invested in entanglements with (super)natural
worlds, unraveling the fears and fantasy of inter-species mingling,
seeking sympathetic alliances between ghosts, bats, mosquitos, angels,
vampires. Exploring binaries between the blessed and the profane,
parallels between these more-than-human subjects are drawn alongside
narratives of racialized, queer and trans communities. Long gestating,
fluid processes of gathering, breaking, repairing, listening and
collaboration result in interdisciplinary projects that include
sculpture, installation, collage, scent and film. They are dedicated
to artistic practice as a means to reclaim and re-enchant
meaning-making from the ruins of capitalism and colonialism.

They have screened and exhibited their work at E-flux Screening Room
(US), BFI London Film Festival (UK), London Short Film Festival (UK),
International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), Videoex (CH), Southern
Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin (CA), Radius CCA
(NL), The National Gallery of Canada (CA), The 36th Ljubljana
Biennale: The Oracle (SL), Vincom Centre for Contemporary Art (VN), A
Queer Museum (VN) and Z33 (BE). They have been in residence at
Triangle Astérides (Marseille, FR), the EKWC (Oisterwijk, NL) and at
the Jan van Eyck Academie (NL) in 2025. The were the winner of the
2025 Ljubljana Biennale Residency Award and were shortlisted for
Canada’s Sobey Award in 2021.
