The Day it Rains Jellyfish Part II: On becoming hybrid proposes the idea of hybridisation or shapeshifting as a way to promote togetherness and multivocality in truth-building. It is an attempt to understand the world from a multiform perspective, allowing other perspectives to inform our own so we can understand each other and our world in its whole complexity. It is a radical coming together: that of flowing into each other, one of together becoming one. In doing so, an alternative, pluriform world is imagined, built as an assemblage of many perspectives. On becoming hybrid offers a view on the truth that reaches beyond an individual-centralising understanding, exemplified through a multi-species and anti-anthropological approach. The works in the exhibition build on a notion of collective truth through hybridization, transformation, metamorphosis, transmission and shapeshifting. They break through the borders that separate species, fusing human, animal, machine, and environment into new forms of existence.
The exhibition explores the possibility to perceive truth as multifold instead of seeing it as a singularity. It is not about replacing one truth with another, but about cultivating a state of shapeshifting or hybridization — the ability to move between, to hover, to inhabit a space that both exists and does not (yet). Rather than letting two entities coexist, a third entity is proposed, one that moves beyond binary thinking and is a hybridization of the two previous ones. Here, the individual dissolves, abandoning their original form for a new, hybrid shape to take its place.
The hybrid represents an embrace of multiplicity — an acknowledgment that truth is not singular or absolute, but rather a collection of perspectives, narratives, and lived experiences that is shaped by multiple entities. Truth is not a fixed point that stands above others, but a hybrid formation: a constantly shifting entity, a shapeshifter.
This exhibition is part of the trilogy The Day it Rains Jellyfish, which looks into the generative possibilities of conspiracy.
The theorization of ‘third space’ is attributed to Homi K. Bhabha. For this curatorial statement we were heavily inspired by Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis’ interpretation related to hybrid knowledge systems.
