Publication: The Day It Rains Jellyfish

This publication accompanies the exhibition trilogy The Day it Rains Jellyfish. This is the first edition of Text my Sister’s yearly Exhibition Exchange Program, taking place in the Czech Republic, Finland and the Netherlands. Together, they bring about other narratives than the ones that are most loud today—some already existing, others anew. We collectively imagine a more symbiotic time and think of other societal values, sought out through speculation, fiction and alternative realities. Within this process, we embrace a multitude of voices and truths and recognise the strength that lies within the multitude of their stories.
Rather than proposing an alternative system, this publication introduces an addition to dominant points of reference, prompting us to critically examine what the narrated world represents and to question the stories that shape our collective imagination towards a future that holds space to us all. As such, the publication serves as a collective exchange of assets that we find valuable. Since the exchange of knowledge is one of these assets, we see value in the exchange between theory and practice.

The publication is divided into three sections titled Part I: On What We Know, Part II: On Becoming Hybrid and Part III: On Re-Evaluating Value. The curatorial essay written by the co-curators Julia Fidder and artists Len Creutzburg are accompanied by commissioned essays from Aska Mayer, Erika Sprey, and Zaher Jureidini, each of whom offer a new perspective on the subthemes. Mayer describes the forms of futurization already present within society, Sprey guides us – organically, but not without warnings – through the fields of dreams, and Jureidini does not let us forget the faces, landscapes and stories of Palestine.
Rather than including a visual description of the works that are part of the exhibition, the artists share a chosen method of meaning-making. Those can be used to understand truth from a different angle or can contribute to the development of a different kind of story. They are instruments, and sometimes more than that, with which the artists identify themselves through their practice; as something that empowers; that speaks on their behalf or reinforces the worlds they build. As such, they are proposals that help to renegotiate what we collectively consider valuable, or what we consider being true.
